Why it gets called wasted money
The typical story goes like this. A shop owner books a roadside banner for three months. The phone does not ring more often. Three months later the banner comes down with the verdict "advertising doesn't work".
The verdict is wrong, but not because of the banner. Image advertising does not promise calls the same week. It makes people recall your name first at the moment of choice, or at least recognise it among others. That moment may come six months later. Measured in enquiries over three months, the result will always be zero.
The second reason is more honest: a small business can rarely afford image advertising at the volume where it works at all. Recognition is built by frequency. One banner on one street for one quarter is not a campaign; it is a single mention.
When it makes sense
Three conditions. If none of them holds, don't start.
The purchase is rare and expensive. Dentistry, renovation, made-to-order furniture, wedding photography. People choose once every few years and look for someone to trust. Here a familiar name genuinely shifts the choice.
The buyer compares brands. If the customer is looking for "the nearest pharmacy", recognition gives nothing — they go wherever is closer. If they are looking for "a good dentist", it does.
The budget lasts months, not weeks. Image advertising is judged over six months at the least. If the money has to come back next month, this is not your tool right now.
When only some conditions hold, there is a middle option: advertising that builds recognition but carries a measurable response, such as its own promo code or QR code. How to build such an ad is covered in the article on eight elements of a direct-response ad.
How to see the effect when it brings no enquiries
The effect of image advertising shows not in enquiries but in how people search for you on their own. Here is what to record before launch and after.
- Searches for your name. Google Search Console shows how often your name was searched on Google and how many of those became clicks. Growth in these queries after launch is the most direct signal. Record the figure for three months before launch, or there will be nothing to compare against.
- Direct visits to the site. People who type the address or open a bookmark. Noisy on its own, but together with name searches it shows the trend.
- "How did you hear about us". The cheapest method. Ask every new customer and write the answer down. Answers are imprecise, but across a hundred customers you will see whether your advertising appears in them.
- Comparing two towns or districts. If you operate in several locations, run the campaign in one and keep the other as a control. The difference in growth between them is the most honest estimate a small business can afford.
One caveat. Growth in name searches after launch does not prove the advertising caused it: the same month may have brought a media mention or the start of the season. That is why a control location is worth more than any chart.
Our position
For most small businesses we do not recommend starting with image advertising. Start with advertising where every hryvnia can be tied to a customer, and with cost per customer worked out for each channel. Image advertising makes sense once those channels work and hit a ceiling: enquiries get more expensive because everyone who was actively looking for you has already been found.
The position does not hold if your product is bought once every few years and chosen on trust. There, recognition is part of the sale, and postponing it means handing customers to competitors people already know.
If you decide to try
- Record baseline figures for three months: name searches, direct visits, the spread of "how did you hear about us" answers.
- Plan the campaign for at least six months and budget for exactly that period. A campaign that will be switched off after a month is better not started.
- If you have a second location, leave it without advertising as a control.
- Judge by the same three figures, not by the number of calls.
If after six months name searches have not moved in either the advertised or the control location, that is the answer — and it cost less than another year of unmeasured advertising.
